TIG welding is ideal for intricate, neat welds involving thin materials and small components. In fact it's the preferred choice for applications where aesthetics and fine detail matter, particularly in automotive, aerospace, and architectural projects. Where the job requires joining thicker metal work pieces, it is usually better to choose MIG or stick welding. TIG welding processes are less suitable for welding automation as well, making it much more of a craft!

How Do TIG Welders Work?

TIG is an acronym of Tungsten Inert Gas. It's a variation on arc welding technique that's synonymous with GTAW - the American acronym (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). This describes the basic setup well. The process uses a tungsten electrode and an inert welding gas. This is most frequently Argon.

TIG welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode, because tungsten, with its enormously high melting point, is not consumed during the welding process. The electrode is held in a carefully designed TIG torch which allows delicate manipulation and has a shroud to keep the weld gas close to the weld pool and make it less likely that air will contact the weld and spoil it. The tungsten electrodes do degrade over time but they are not consumed to fill the weld. The process aims to melt the edges of the workpieces being welded and only uses a separate filler wire to fill in gaps.

The TIG rods are hand held… that's a gloved hand by the way. Welding PPE is just as important for TIG welding as any other arc or gas process. There is no specific welding helmet for this process as our range of welding helmets and masks are mostly adjustable. We do recommend buying an air fed helmet if your welding habits are at all regular.

The inert gas shield ensures a clean, oxidation-free weld by excluding air from the molten metal in the weld pool. Amongst the many advantages of TIG are the lack of splatter, very little smoke or fume production and the neat finish that is possible. But bear in mind the advice about air fed helmets!

Although the basic technology is straight forward, there are many variations to this welding method that have developed over the years, as welders have experimented with different materials. With high-frequency (HF) arc start capabilities, our welders make precise, spatter-free weld initiation easy, reducing the need for post-weld clean-up. Plus, with pulse welding functionality, our range of ESAB and SWP quality TIG welders give operators precise control over heat input, which helps reduce warping and distortion in even the thinnest metals.
